Being pregnant can have a great effect on your skin. Many expectant women enjoy a beautifully clear skin and positively glow during their term, but unfortunately not all women are so lucky.

If acne is going to appear it will usually start showing within the first three months of your pregnancy, since this is the time that a steep rise in hormone level occurs. Fortunately, most women's skin problems clear up following pregnancy. Indeed for some the problem may start to clear up during their pregnancy. (continued below)

As we've already stated, generally the underlying cause of acne is hormonal changes. During pregnancy, this rise in hormone levels often initiates a variety of skin changes leading to acne breakouts.

Acne is formed by an increase in the amount of sebum that is being produced. The excess sebum then fills the glands, and then eventually blocks the pores, with an acne eruption being the likely result. Women have their highest hormonal activity when they're expecting a baby and any such eruptions must not be treated by using acne medications such as:

  • Retin-A
  • Accutane
  • Tetracycline.
Acne in pregnancy to some degree is surprisingly common, irrespective of whether you have previously had acne or not. Progesterone is more like androgen (the male hormone) than oestrogen and causes the secretions of your skin glands to increase, which of course can lead to further acne inflammation.

After the first trimester (three months), progesterone is produced by the placenta and not the ovaries, so acne shouldn't worsen and in fact may clear up after this time.
Here is a list of things you can do to minimize the likelihood of acne breakouts without causing harm to your baby, and also to help maintain your health:

  • Application of Aloe pulp, holy basil, and carrot and beetroot juice is also considered to be safe during pregnancy to treat acne. Using an astringent which is non-medicated is advisable.

  • Exercise daily to stimulate circulation to all parts of your body including your skin.

  • Eat lots of fresh fruits and washed veggies. If you're finding it hard to eat well because you have morning sickness, try freshly made smoothies and soups to get the essential nutrients from the fruit and veggies into your diet easily.

  • Drink about 6 to 8 glasses of water daily to keep your skin elastic and body hydrated. This will also help to dilute and expel hormonal secretions, thereby helping to improve your acne.

  • Don't over-wash because this can stimulate more oil.

  • Don't touch your pimples as this only spreads bacteria.

  • Use disposable sponges or cotton balls for toners, or makeup.

  • Benzoyl peroxide cream or gel is the usual option for treating acne during pregnancy.

  • Another possibility is a solution containing salicylic acid. Erythromycin is the only antibiotic regarded as being safe in pregnancy, but it may not be very effective as many skin bacteria are now resistant to it.
Probably the best treatment for scars and red markings left behind from acne is Rosa Mosqueta Oil, but is only recommended for use after your acne has gone. While you still have active acne, try the Raw Gaia MSM Beauty Spray instead.

Fighting acne during pregnancy can seem both tedious and challenging when you least need it, but it doesn't have to be that way if you take good care of your skin daily.
